School Launches Eco-farm for Community
Posted: 19th April 2023The school community will be supported through the cost-of-living crisis thanks to the launch of an eco-farm.
Sixth form students are creating a green eco-farm on the school grounds.
Working with eco club members, the Year 12 students will install 45 raised beds on a disused area of school grounds to produce crops to be donated to food banks.
Those working on the farm, as part of enrichment, will wear colour-coded badges to show the role and responsibility they have within the project.
The farm will act as a way of spreading awareness of the risk of climate change, encouraging younger children to get first-hand experience at conservation, as well as supporting the science curriculum.
Colin Wilson, science teacher, said: "The vision is to grow produce to donate to the local community, promoting sustainability and educating lower school students in natural science and sustainability.
"Having pitched their idea to the board of governors, the students can now put their plan into action and build a lasting legacy at the school, benefitting students and those in the community most at need."
The students have created a succession plan to ensure future sixth formers run the farm, along with lower school students.
