History Lessons Come To Life

Posted: 7th March 2018

History lessons came to life when teenagers took a trip abroad.

A group of 20 Year 11 students from Epping St John’s School got a deeper understanding of GCSE topics Weimar and Nazi Germany and the Cold War with the trip to Berlin and Krakow.

In Berlin, students had a coach tour of the city and saw the Reichstag building, Brandenburg Gate, the book burning memorial, the Soviet War memorial, the Jewish memorial and the East Side Gallery, where they got to see remains of the wall. They also visited the Berlin Jewish Museum, where they experienced the various rooms designed to give a sense of being a Jewish person under Nazi rule.

In Krakow, the group visited Auschwitz, as well as the castle and cathedral.

Anmarie Petrou, history teacher, said: “The imagery of many of the photos and the commentary from our guide were thought-provoking and highly moving. Our students were noticeably moved by the things they saw and heard and approached the day with maturity.

“Students were able to apply their knowledge and interest of history. They were able to see many impressive buildings and sights while also having the invaluable opportunity of visiting the concentration camp.”
