Enrichment Week
Posted: 10th January 2018The final week of term saw traditional lessons thrown out at Epping St John’s School.
Students in all year groups spent the last few days before the Christmas break trying their hand at a variety of new subjects and skills.
Enrichment Week sees the school timetable replaced with sessions, visitors and workshops to open their eyes to life outside of the classroom.
The week saw –
Year 7 work with Anglian Water to look at the engineering behind water saving techniques, putting what they have learnt in lessons into real-life situations
Year 8 try out taster sessions of subject options they may select next year, including foreign languages, history, geography, art, drama, dance, media, PE and design and technology
Year 9 take part in team-building exercises with the Army
Year 10 look at life beyond school, focusing on building their CVs and discussing their options with outside employers
Year 11 try out taster sessions of subject options they could take at A-level, with a trip to Harlow College
Dustin Schuyler, assistant headteacher, said: “Enrichment Week is an opportunity for students to do things outside of the normal lesson structure with enrichment activities. Within the curriculum we follow, there is not the time to indulge in activities like this, so it is good to be able to step away for a week and apply the skills they have learnt in lessons into real-life scenarios. It gives them a taste of life beyond school.
“With so many visitors coming to take part in Enrichment Week, it’s also an opportunity for students to showcase their skills and to get input from people who are not the teachers they see every day.
“It’s all credit to the school for finding the time to give students these enrichment opportunities as it’s so nice to develop students as individuals.”
