GCSE Case Studies

Posted: 13th August 2021

Students today flocked to sign up for a growing sixth form.

Today, we were open today for students collecting their GCSE results to register for further education classes.

Our sixth form was still celebrating seeing its biggest cohort of students achieve the best set of results in their A-levels this summer.

ESJ GCSE results Tilly NelsonAmong those signing up for sixth form was Tilly Nelson, from Epping, who is looking to study sociology, media studies, English and geography from September.

She achieved two grade 8, four grade 7, two grade 6 and one grade 5 in her GCSEs.

She said: “I am really happy.

“I decided to stay on at the sixth form as I know all the subjects I have picked are taught by good teachers. I have always liked the school and felt good there. The last couple of years of sixth formers have really made me want to go there, too, as they really liked the sixth form.

“When we got into Year 11, we were given so much help by our teachers, but also the freedom to work on our own.

“Over the years, the year groups have gotten closer. I already know lots of sixth formers which makes joining a lot easier. I am close with sixth formers because we have been encouraged to make those connections. That is nice as when we start sixth form, we already have friends there. That has definitely helped to make us feel more comfortable with the move.

“I am excited to get stuck in and to concentrate on the subjects I have chosen.”

ESJ GCSE results Samaya Kaleel

Samaya Kaleel, from Waltham Abbey, achieved three grade 9, two grade 8, four grade 7 and one grade 6 in her GCSEs. She had also picked up a grade 8 last year.

She will study history, English, economics and biology at the sixth form.

She said: “I was really happy with my grade 9s; I thought they would be grade 8s.

“I love the teachers, the school and the people at Epping St John’s. It is a very happy place.

“Online learning has been really difficult as it took it out of you. As soon as we came back to school, our teachers did absolutely everything to support us.

“I am looking forward to the freedom of sixth form and being in charge of my own studies, as well as applying myself to my chosen subjects.

“I can’t wait. It will be nice to get back to it.”

ESJ GCSE results Mia KnightFor Mia Knight, it was the relationship she has with her teachers that attracted her to the sixth form.

She will study history, Spanish and psychology after achieving three grade 9, six grade 8 and one grade 7 in her GCSEs this summer.

She said: “It was a bit of a shock when my results came through; they are better than I expected.

“At first, it was difficult to get used to online learning, but as time went on it became the normal. The school did a lot of student surveys to ask how we were finding it and lessons kept on improving.

“I am looking forward to working in the more grown-up environment of the sixth form. I know the teachers and they know me, so it feels the best place for me.”

ESJ GCSE results Paul AdamsPaul Adams will study maths, biology and chemistry at the sixth form, with hopes of going into a career in biomedical science.

He bagged five grade 8 and four grade 7 in his GCSEs.

He said: “My teachers have been great at recommending different revision guides and websites for me to use to extend my learning outside of school.

“Learning during the pandemic has been difficult, but I think overall I have managed it fairly well.

“I am looking forward to meeting students from other schools who join Epping St John’s.”
