Year 11 students are attending the GCSE Poetry Live Conference today. They are currently furiously notetaking as Carol Ann Duffy explores one of their set poems for the exam. Real dedication from them during our half term! pic.twitter.com/NqNa9P0KbC

Schoolgirl sets up NHS donation station

Schoolgirl sets up NHS donation station

Posted: 12th May 2020

A schoolgirl has inspired our school to set up a donation station to support the NHS during the Coronavirus pandemic.

Isabella Fisher started collecting items from her neighbours to donate to frontline workers – filling a car with donations within the first day.

Working with the school’s PTA, the Year 8 student has expanded her work, with a donation station set up at Epping St John’s Church of England School.

Three donation boxes have been placed at the entrance to the school, inviting donations of food for Harlow Foodbank, linen to be turned into scrubs for the NHS by Nazeing Scrubs Sewing Group and games, films and books to be donated to care homes.

Isabella said: “I feel good about myself as I know I am helping people in need. My parents help me and I feel grateful for that and for what I have. Other people do not have the food that they need.

“It is nice to see other people are donating and that people care and are helping the community.”

Mum Heather, a member of the PTA, said: “We saw an appeal on Facebook asking for donations and wanted to do something to help.

“Isabella is a doer and just gets on with things. She wanted to produce a poster and helped me to sort everything out.”

Sarah Viccars, senior assistant headteacher, said: “It’s really nice that this whole project was started by one of our children. As a school, we have been inspired by a child.

“It is nice to see our students learning life lessons, looking after their community and each other and doing amazing things.

“Our PTA are incredible; they are the best I’ve ever seen in any school. They started this project off by collecting on the doorstep and had an overwhelming response. They then spoke with us as a school to see how we could help to develop it further.”
