Athletes making school proud

Athletes making school proud

Posted: 15th July 2019

Two athletes from an Epping school are proving they are leaps and bounds ahead in sport.

Year 10 students Freya Henshall and James Petty are doing Epping St John’s Church of England School proud.

Freya took an interest in high jump during her school PE lessons last year – and is already fifth best in west Essex.

She competed in her first County Championships, in Chelmsford, and cleared one metre 43 – her highest jump yet – to place fifth.

She said: “I have done high jump a couple of times this year and about three times last year at school. I have always been keen on running and athletics, but one week it was raining and so we did high jump instead. I was quite good at it and really enjoyed it.

“This was my first big competition so it’s a really big achievement. I am hoping to get a lot higher for the district sports competition this month.

“I work on my technique during athletics club each week and my PE teachers have said they are available every day after school to help me. It is really good to have them supporting me. They can see my talent and so are trying to help me to reach my potential.”

James joined Harlow Athletics Club just before London 2012 as he enjoyed running at school.

At the recent county schools competition - County Championships, in Chelmsford - he achieved a bronze medal in the 400m event.

He said: “I like running and so thought I would give it a try. Within a couple of years, I was entering competitions.

“I would like to now go on to the national competitions within two years. I take part in competitions at school to help me to improve.”

Tom McGarr, PE subject lead, said: “The PE department are extremely proud of their hard work and dedication to sport. James has always had a keen interest and passion within athletics, whereas Freya plays in an elite academy for netball and has shown real natural talent for the high jump which she has enjoyed while attending regular extra-curricular sessions.”
