BMAT Logoclose

Outstanding Education

Supporting primary and secondary schools across Essex and North & East London, BMAT is a growing multi-academy trust with a singular vision: schools, teachers and pupils freed to succeed.

Visit BMAT

Local Governing Board

I would like to welcome you to the LGB section of the website. You will be able to find important information about the role that the LGB play in the operation of the school. Epping St. John's Church of England School is one of several schools who are part of a Multi Academy Trust called BMAT. BMAT was created to establish a network of schools in the Essex and North London that provide excellent academic tuition and outstanding vocational experiences for young people.

BMAT holds ultimate responsibility for all statutory obligations, accountability and decisions regarding the running of each individual academy/School in the Trust.  However, BMAT delegates some of the operational decisions to LGB to enable a more localised and focused control, though it retains legal responsibility for standards across all academies in the multi academy trust. It gives due regard to any recommendations and guidance received from the LGBs and recognises their valuable contribution.

Although the LGBs are constituted in an advisory capacity to the BMAT Board of Directors, they play a vital and fundamental role of raising attainment and achievement in each academy/school through:

  • Quality of Education
  • Personal Development
  • Leadership & Management
  • Behaviour & Attitudes

To see what other areas ESJ LGB has responsibility for in terms of review and oversight see the bottom of this page for a document called Allocation of Governance for Trust Board level and Local level.

The ESJ LGB is made up of two staff members, volunteer parents/carers and members of the local community. Staff members and volunteer parents/carers are appointed by election by staff or parents/carers. Members of the local community are appointed by the board.

If you would like to contact a member of the ESJ LGB please contact Mr. Blaney, Executive Head who will direct you to the relevant member of the LGB.

BMAT

Epping St. John's School Church of England School is a sponsored academy and is part of BMAT.

The allocation of BMAT governance responsibilities and ESJ LGB responsibilities within BMAT schools can be found below. If you require further information about BMAT, articles of association and annual audited accounts please click contact the Head of School or BMAT by the contact email below.

You can contact BMAT by email contact@bmatrust.org

If you wish to contact any member of the Governing Body please address your request c/o Ms Jade Garness, Headteacher's PA at Epping St. John’s, Bury Lane, Epping, CM16 5JB

If parents/carers or members of the ESJ community wish to see copies of the minutes of LGB meetings please contact Ms Garness and these will be made available within ten working days.

I have been a School Governor for eleven years serving local schools Epping at Primary & Secondary level. I was appointed Chair of Epping St Johns Church of England LGB in January 2020. Students and staff well-being are among my priorities and I am a Mental Health First Aid Champion.

I have a particular interest in the performing and expressive arts and ensuring equal opportunities for every child, regardless of circumstances. My goal is for every student to leave Epping St Johns Church of England School as an aspirational, well-rounded and courageous young adult.

Revd Lee Batson - Foundation Governor

Appointed 09/06/2020

I have been Team Rector for the Epping Team Ministry for the last three years, and the opportunity to be involved in the life of ESJ was one of the reasons I accepted this job. I have been on the local governing board since I arrived, and have a particular interest and focus on the Sixth Form as well as the school's Christian ethos and chaplaincy provision. I also serve as Chair of another MAT which includes many of the feeder schools for ESJ, as well as being Governor at Coopersale CE Primary. I am keen that all staff and students discover how much they matter through the time they spend at ESJ, and that all find time to grow in wisdom such that they can enjoy a future that is as abundant (not just in economic terms) as possible.

Mike Coggins - Foundation Governor

A regular Church attender, he is keen to promote the positive benefits of the Christian ethos of the school. Professionally, is a Chartered Accountant working in the Lloyd’s Insurance market as a Finance Director and IT Director. Passionate believer that all students are talented and need the environment and confidence to identify, nurture and use those talents. Frequently says, “we only pass this way once”.

Hobbies include Road Safety, coaching for the Advanced Motorcycling test and training church bell-ringers. He has lived in Epping for 30 years and loves being a Grandad.

Suzanne Milne - Foundation Governor

Appointed 01/10/2019

Originally from Epping, I went to school locally, before going onto further education in London. I graduated with a Bsc Hons and subsequently took up a place at Medical School. Having moved back to

Epping, I was invited to become a member of the LGB for Epping St John’s Church of England School, as a Foundation Governor for the Church family and the school, taking up the position in Autumn 2019.

This is my first role in Education. It is an exciting opportunity enabling me to champion the value of learning and exploration whilst promoting and nurturing the Christian ethos of the school.
